JOB TITLE: Middle School Assistant Principal

 

QUALIFICATIONS: A current Washington State Principal's credentials, a Master's degree, and experience teaching secondary level students preferred.

 

REPORTS TO: The Building Principal

 

JOB GOAL: To assist principal in maximizing student learning through positive leadership and effective management and supervision of personnel, students, facilities, and other resources. To assist principal in supervising and coordinating all phases of the 5-8 grade educational program.

 

SUPERVISES AND EVALUATES: Assigned staff including teachers, custodians, aides, secretaries, and other building personnel as assigned by the principal.

 

Instructional Leadership

  1. Works for the improvement of instruction and student performance and provides leadership and assistance to the staff in bringing about a professional and positive environment.
  2. Strives to attain positive school climate and good public perception.
  3. Assists principal in managing the curriculum and the academic program including:
  • Scheduling and staff assignment
  • Registration
  • Reporting achievement
  • Advising
  • Staff interviews
  • Updating curricular offerings
  • Updating instructional modes, materials and techniques
  • Testing and measurement
  • Fostering high levels of student achievement
  1. Assists principal in evaluating instruction, plant safety and provisions for student health, documents in writing and reports any inefficiency, neglect of duty, disregard of policies or rules, improper attitude or conduct of teachers or other employees under his/her charge to the principal.
  2. Develop and maintain a positive environment.
  3. Establish and maintain collaborative professional relationships with others.
  4. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of students.
  5. Lead efforts to maintain high standards of classroom behavior aligned with school-wide behavior expectations, such as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
  6. Participate in district-wide improvement efforts/district initiatives.
  7. Engage in professional learning and implement strategies to support the learning needs of multilingual learners. 
  8. Conducts staff meetings and other meetings as needed and assists in providing for staff development.
  9. Assists principal with staff assignments, scheduling, supervising and leading the staff effectively in the performance of student supervision and discipline code enforcement.
  10. Assists principal as directed in the following areas:
  • Keeping accurate records of discipline
  • Revising and distributing annually to each family a revised handbook, student rights and responsibilities code, and discipline code with a parent sign-off for them
  • Assigning staff to supervision duties in order to ensure student
  • Supervising, recording, and reporting attendance of 5-8 grade students and staff and required annual reports. 
  • Administering in accordance with current WAC's and RCW's fire drills, flag salutes, special days, etc.
  • Compiling and approving ordering of instructional materials for grades
  • Submitting requests to principal for final approval
  • Approving applications for events to be placed on the school calendar
  • Supervising inventory updates each fall and Spring
  • Maintaining and preserving building level records for later reporting or
  • Supervising ASB sales and the receipting of all building level receipts to the principal
  • Coordinating use of the school building facilities with the principal

 

STUDENT RECORDS:

  1. Assists with the maintenance of student records including discipline
  2. Gives input for the classification, promotion or retention of pupils in the school

 
LEADERSHIP TEAM:

  1. ls a contributing member of the district leadership.
  2. Attends and contributes to meetings called by the superintendent or requested by the school.
  3. Communicates accurately both the tone and intent of board policies or administrative regulations or positions.
  4. Follows appropriate channels of communication, avoiding actions or messages which might contribute to unrest or dissension. Enhances the image of the administrative team by presenting a united, positive posture.
  5. Maintains the confidentiality of sensitive information.
  6. Serves on committees and task forces as assigned by the principal and/or superintendent.
  7. Serves with parents, faculty, and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives through appropriate community relations.
  8. Carries out punctually such other assignments or directions of the principal, or obligations of the position, as may be required.
  9. Submits, on a timely basis, reports requested by the principal, superintendent, the board, or other authorized agencies.
  10. Achieves goals established by the principal, superintendent, the board and the management team.

LIMITS OF AUTHORITY: Is subordinate to the principal, superintendent and the policies of the board of directors, the laws of the United States and the RCW's and WAC's of the State of Washington and other applicable rules of appropriate jurisdiction. Has delegated authority from the principal over students and staff assigned to him/her.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is a tenured position renewable on a continuing contract basis after the third year of successful service.

 

LENGTH: 203 days

SCHEDULE: Time as required to fulfill duties of the position.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: As determined by the Board of Directors, state law and local board policy.

EVALUATION: This position shall be evaluated at least once annually by June 30th in a written narrative format using this position description as a basic outline
