JOB TITLE: Substitute Assistant Cook (Food Services)

 

 

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Possession of a current food handler’s permit.
  3. One year experience in quantity cooking. Vocational or technical training in institutional cooking may substitute for required work experience.
  4. Must be able to read, write, and perform mathematics for food production.

 

NATURE OF POSITION: Food service programs are an essential service of the modern school. A food service employee is an integral part of the educational system whether that person responsible for cleaning the lunchroom, cooking and serving the food, or managing the whole operation.

 

A satisfactory food service worker must enjoy working with children. She/he must be honest, have appropriate behavior at school, work well with the whole school staff, and be pleasant in his/her service to the children. She/he takes instructions and criticisms from his/her supervisor in the proper spirit.

 

She/he understands the whole school nutrition program and endeavors to promote it in the community. The school food service staff is a team whose duties may include cleaning, food preparation, serving, dishwashing, or any type of work normally found in a kitchen or lunchroom.

 

REPORTS TO: Food Service Director.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

A functional list of duties and responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, the following:

 

  1. Prepares all types of food items to fulfill the nutritional needs of students set forth by the state and federal requirements under general directions of the head cook and the food service director.
  2. Operates cooking and kitchen equipment in food preparation and dishwashing.
  3. Cleans all kitchen areas and equipment or supervise this function.
  4. Maintains necessary supplies and goods for assigned meals notifying supervisor of items needed for his/her meal preparation.
  5. Helps to receive and put away stock as it is received.
  6. Monitors freezers, refrigerators, and food storage areas for rotation of items, i.e.. first in, first out, to maintain fresh food items.
  7. May assist in meal planning, daily record keeping, and daily reports.
  8. Coordinates the production and/or serving of foods; inspects food for portion size, maintains safe serving temperatures and the pleasing appearance of food items.
  9. Helps in the distribution of prepared food to satellites.
  10. Attends workshops and training sessions to continue education (knowledge) of proper sanitation and food preparation methods and to keep up with continual changes of state and other government requirements.


Be able to perform job tasks as follows:

  1. Lift and carry 10-15 lbs. frequently.
  2. Assist with lifting 100 lbs. occasionally.
  3. Load and unload products from vehicles of various heights from 3-5 feet.
  4. Use push and pull methods to move products in the work area.
  5. Store products requiring arm extension, straight and overhead reaching, kneeling, bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
  6. Use repetitive motions involved with food production.
  7. Work from an awkward position to accomplish cleaning of equipment.
  8. Be on feet the majority of the work shift.
  9. Be of general good health.
  10. Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
  11. The noise level in the work environment ranges from low to high.
  12. The employee will work near or with mechanical equipment.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.
